Sound effects evaluation
Overall, I think this sound effect project went really well. Some sounds were recorded with a sony voice recorder and some I got from the internet.
I made sure I watched the clip I chose in great detail so that I knew exactly what sounds I needed. I created a mind map of the sounds I needed and I colour coded it to show which ones I'd record myself and which ones I'd get from the internet.
The first sound I needed was the sound of glasses being put down on a table. So me and two other people from my class who needed the same sound effects as me found an empty classroom and took the sony voice recorder in with us. We used a china cup and recorded it being put down onto the table. We consulted our mind maps and recorded the rest of the sounds in the empty classroom. Another one we needed was the sound of someone licking the lid of a milk bottle. We recorded each of us making the sound so we could decide which was the best one afterwards. The next sound we recorded was the sound of liquid being poured into a cup. We used the same china cup from before and recorded water being poured into it. It worked really well.
These were all the recorded sounds I needed. The rest had to be downloaded from the internet.
The first sound I needed was the sound of a bell ringing. I found this effect on Youtube and used a video converter to convert it to an mp3 file. I also downloaded the sound of tooth brushing and a popping sound.
After putting all the sound effects in the correct place, I decided that the clip definitely needed music in the background. Tom and Jerry cartoons normally have a kind of 20's swing song in the background so I search 20's music into Youtube and found a song that worked well.
I really enjoyed this assignment and overall I think it went pretty well. The sound effects fitted well with the moving images.
If I got the opportunity to do this assignment again, I would have chosen a different part of the clip. Maybe a part with more action in it.

Evaluation
For this task, we had to film a news report in three different locations; A quiet outside location, a quiet inside location and a busy inside location. Our task was to film two people reading the news report in each location and then look back on our footage and change the things we thought needed improving.
Roles: I was in charge of the sound, Amica operated the camera and India and Amy were the news readers.
Location one
Our first location was in the car park outside our classroom. We used a boom mic to record the sound. When we looked back on the clip, there were a few major things wrong with it. Firstly, the sun was very bright and was creating quite a noticeable lens flare. There was also visible equipment in shot, such as the sound kit and the tripod bag. We didn't notice this until after the filming. As for the sound, the wind was very loud and you could clearly hear the traffic in the distance.
The next time we filmed in this location, we made sure we faced away from the sun so there was no sun flare. We also ensured that there was no equipment in shot. Another thing we did was switch to tie mics instead of the boom for better sound.
Location 2
Our second location was a quiet inside location in an empty classroom. We set up the news readers at a table and made the camera the same level as them. We used a boom mic for this location as well. When we looked back, we discovered that it would work a lot better if we used tie mics as the news readers voices would be louder and clearer. So, when we filmed again, we did everything we did last time except we used tie mics instead. The audio was a lot clearer than it was before.
Location 3
Location 3 was a very busy and loud corridor. We used a boom mic and set the camera up outside a toilet. We realised afterwards that this was a mistake as people kept getting into shot. The boom mic was also a mistake as it was recording everyone else's conversations as well as the dialogue we actually wanted to record. When we filmed here a second time, we made the change from boom mic to tie mics and made sure we filmed away from the toilets

Revised Equipment list for sound on location task
Location one - Outside
Location two - Quiet inside
Location 3 - Busy inside
- Use tie mics instead of boom mic to reduce the sound of wind and the general background noise
- Change tape just in case the tape is the cause of the echo
Location two - Quiet inside
- Use tie mics to make sure the audio is clearer and louder
- Change tape for the same reason for location one
Location 3 - Busy inside

Task 1
The general mood that is conveyed with this song is sad, slow and soulful. The singer, Jazz Morley sings in a very emotional way and it's played on piano which creates a very raw feel.
As this song is about her brother going to war, it's clearly quite a sad song and the piano and emotion in her voice reflects this.

Preparing to shoot on location
Why do you think it's important to make a plan before you go and shoot film or audio on location?
It's always important to plan your location filming in advance in case not everything goes according to plan. Something could easily go wrong. For example, if you're filming a weather report on location and you know it'll be rainy, then you'll need to be prepared with covers and umbrellas etc.
Sound on location
Ubicación Uno: Our first location was an outside location. When we listened back to the sound, the first things we noticed about the sound was the wind and the traffic in the background. Also, there was a strange echo with the voices. We're still unsure as to what this is. There is also quite a prominent sun flare in the corner and a shadow in the bottom right corner. There was visible equipment at the side too.
In order to make the sound and footage better, we will need to film in a more sheltered area to avoid wind and traffic sounds. We might also need to film in a more shady area to make sure there's no sun flare or shadows.
The best way to fix the echo problem is to film everything again.
Ubicación Dos: This location was a quiet empty classroom. When we listened to the sound on this clip, we discovered that the audio was quite quiet. We can fix this problem by using tie mics. Also, the echoing occurred in this clip too.
Ubicación Tres: This was a busy inside location. The first thing we noticed was the people talking in the background so it was difficult to hear the script. The echoing was still an issue in this clip but we'll just film everything again.
